On stage at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. This was the last gig that I had my Telecaster bass and Tommy had his red Les Paul. Eddie Shepard, our road manager, lost them at the airport the next day. Both guitars were one of a kind and our sound was never quite the same. Karma, eh?

It's the middle of our first set at the Denver Pop Festival as the crowd is running out of the stands to escape the tear gas released a minute or so earlier upwind of the stadium by the Denver Police. Candy is calling on the crowd to be calm and come sit in front of the stage. I'm shouting at the cops for being stupid. A moment later, Candy told the crowd that 'since we're already crying, let's play some blues.' She took what was potentially a very dark situation and turned it into something positive.

CU Student Union 1969. — with Tommy Bolin, Candy Givens, Robbie Chamberlin and David Givens.

(David Givens) This represents a really good time in the Zephyr story. We had already been to San Francisco, L.A., and lived in New York for a while, but hadn't yet played the Denver Pop Festival nor made our first album. We were truly happy and full of positive energy.

This is the Sunset Ride version of ZEPHYR playing at Tulagi in Boulder. Candy on the mic, Daniel Smythe on keys, David Givens on bass, John Alfonse on congas, and Jock Bartley on guitar. We had just finished recording Sunset Ride in New York and this was our first gig in early 1972. We had tried to get Warner Brothers to let us change the name of the band to "The Bees" because Candy and I felt strongly that this was something new and that the name ZEPHYR belonged to Tommy, John, Bobby, and Robbie as much as it did to the two of us. Warner Brothers denied our request and that was that, although Candy and I always referred to this band as "The Bees" when we talked about it between the two of us. In any case, it was a great band. The drummer, Michael Wooten, went on to play with Carole King for several years and guitarist Jock Bartley went on to play with Gram Parsons and Firefall.
There will be more on this chapter of the ZEPHYR story in the future.

THIS FROM SAL SERPENTINE SARIO

In honor of the new Zephyr “Going Back To Colorado” 45th anniversary CDs! A pic of Zephyr and Otis Taylor jamming at Norlin Library, CU-Boulder... 1970 or ‘71 I would guess. — with Tommy Bolin, Candy Givens, Otis Taylor Band, Bobby Berge and David Givens.

“What I like about this shot, is it shows the focus and intensity of the group...the cohesion. Everyone locked in to Bobby’s rhythm. It illustrates that Zephyr was a unified band... an all for one, one for all kind of group”.
